Landscape lighting
Lighting is the element most often cut from a budget and most often regretted. The reason is simple: it has to be wired while the deck is still open.
Riser lights, post caps and path lighting all run off one low-voltage system. While the deck is framed and the boards are not yet down, running that wiring is quick and cheap.
Once the deck is finished, adding it means pulling boards up and putting them back. That is labour, it risks the finish, and on a hidden-fastener deck it is genuinely awkward. This is the one element where we will tell you plainly that deferring it costs you money.
It also changes what the space is for. An unlit deck stops being used at dusk. A lit one is where people stay.
