Decks & porches
Most of what decides whether a deck is still good in fifteen years is under it, not on top of it. Here is what we actually build and what you have to decide.
People come in asking about board color. That matters, but it is the cheapest thing to change your mind about and the least likely to fail. What decides whether a deck lasts is the framing, the footings, and how the whole thing attaches to the house.
We frame with pressure-treated lumber as standard. Aluminum framing costs more and will outlive the boards sitting on it — worth it on a high deck or anywhere you want a dry, usable space underneath, because the drainage system has to be designed in from the start and cannot be added later.
Boards go down with hidden fasteners, so there is no line of screw heads running the length of your deck. On the surface we fit capped composite or capped PVC, never bare wood.
Composite or PVC
Both are capped — a hard shell bonded over the core so moisture, stains and UV never reach it. That cap is the whole reason either one outlasts wood. What differs is what sits underneath it.
The core is recycled wood fiber bound in polyethylene. It has weight and density underfoot and reads more like a board and less like a manufactured product, which is why most people prefer how it feels.
Entirely polymer. With no organic content there is nothing in the board for moisture or mold to feed on, which is what makes it the right answer around water and in full Mississippi sun.
Our honest default in central Mississippi is capped composite for most backyards, and capped PVC anywhere the ground stays wet and slow to dry or where you will walk barefoot in full afternoon sun. We would rather talk you into the cheaper one when the lot allows it.
Trex
Trex builds composite only; there is no PVC board anywhere in the range. The collections differ in how convincing the grain is, how many colors you get, and how long the warranty runs. Every one of them is capped.

TimberTech splits into two families. AZEK is the PVC side and carries the cool-touch technology and the widest boards. TimberTech PRO is the composite side. Being able to price both against each other on the same job is the practical reason we carry the brand.

Two things worth knowing before you shop. Trex does not make a 7¼″ wide plank — only TimberTech's AZEK Vintage and AZEK Harvest do. And Trex Signature is down to two colors, so if you have seen an older sample rack it is out of date. Biscayne, in Transcend Lineage, is Trex's 2026 color of the year.
Often a fifth to a third of the whole job, and the biggest lever on how the deck looks. Aluminum gives the least visual weight per dollar; cable keeps a view; glass is the clearest and the most expensive; composite matches the boards.
A deck two feet up is straightforward. At six feet you are into deeper footings, taller posts, bracing and guard railing, and the cost climbs faster than the height does. Stairs are the most labor-intensive part of any deck.
The ledger is the single most common serious failure on a residential deck. On an older house we check what is behind the siding before anything is fastened to it, and sometimes the honest answer is to build freestanding.
